Tammy Yang was born in Hong Kong and immigrated to the United States with her family when she was 16 years old. Her family settled in New York City. Being born in a Christian home, Tammy went to church when she was young and became a Christian at the age of 14. While she was a college student in New York City, Tammy felt that the Lord called her to full-time ministry. She then decided to change her major to linguistics and transferred to SUNY Buffalo. She believed that if God wanted her to be a missionary to Africa, it would be easier to learn a new language.
After graduating from college, Tammy went to Trinity Evangelical Divinity School in Chicago in 1992. In her second quarter of the theological training, she took a children’s ministry class. It was an eye-opening experience for Tammy and she felt in love with it. With much encouragement, support and teaching, Tammy’s professor/mentor challenged her to do her field education in children’s ministry. She later graduated from Trinity with a Master of Religious Education.
After graduating from the seminary, Tammy married to Chii. Besides being a full-time mother to two young children, she also assisted Chii in his church ministry. Then in 2001 Tammy was involved in a church plant and became the children’s ministry director. Her love and enthusiasm for the children continued to grow. She believes that the work of children’s Sunday School is like sowing seeds in the children’s hearts. These seeds will sprout, grow and bear fruit one day. Her goal is to teach the Bible creatively so the children can truly understand God’s truth and not be bored by it.
In June 2007, Tammy was diagnosed with stomach cancer. God was faithful and gave her this promise from Psalm 128:6 “May you see your children’s children,” assuring Tammy that she would see her children grow up despite of her illness. From her sickness, Tammy realized life can take an unexpected turn and she should not take anything for granted. Every new morning is a blessing from God. As she continues to serve God, she is deeply convicted that we need to win this generation for Christ. “Direct your children onto the right path, and when they are older, they will not leave it.” (Proverbs 22:6)
